get outl.
one binary. your notes.

Native builds for macOS, Linux and Windows — plus iOS and Android. No Electron, no account, no cloud. Pulled straight from the latest GitHub beta.

desktop app

The native app — the full outl experience with the editor, daily journal and tree view. Linux ships as .deb, .rpm and .AppImage: there's no apt/dnf repo yet, so grab the package for your distro and install it like any other. On Windows the desktop app is still in progress — the CLI / TUI below runs today.

Docker — an always-on peer optional

You don't need this. Two devices sync directly, and that is the normal setup. But P2P converges only when two devices can reach each other, and a laptop shut at 18:00 never overlaps a phone edited at 22:00. A box that stays awake closes that gap — on hardware you own. outl serve holds the P2P endpoint itself, so the container is a peer, not a server your notes pass through. Turn it off and the rest of your devices carry on.

$ docker compose build
$ outl peer pair --name laptop
$ docker compose run --rm outl peer pair --ticket <ticket>
$ docker compose up -d
● it's a beta

outl is pre-1.0 and ships fast. The format is plain markdown on disk, so your notes are never locked in — but expect rough edges. Stable brew install outl lands with 1.0.

● verify your download

Every archive ships a .sha256. Compare it with shasum -a 256 <file> before extracting. Builds are also attested on the release page.

point your LLM at it.

outl ships an MCP server — Claude, Cursor and ChatGPT can read and write your notes as a second brain.
